Galveston Bay Recognizes Anheuser-Busch

Foundation Names Company’s Houston Brewery its “Bay Business of the Year”

WEBSTER, Texas, Nov. 9, 2007

The Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) recently announced that it had named the Anheuser-Busch Houston brewery as its 2007 “Bay Business of the Year.” The award highlights a business that uses Galveston Bay in a sustainable fashion, allowing the natural resources of Galveston Bay to be enjoyed by current and future generations. The company was honored at the Annual Galveston Bay Foundation Rigs ’N Reefs Gala on Nov. 2.

“Anheuser-Busch has made a profound commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability,” said GBF President Bob Stokes. “The Houston brewery has initiated multiple projects and programs to enhance their conservation efforts and minimize their impact on Galveston Bay and the local environment.”

Stokes credited Anheuser-Busch’s Houston brewery with significant accomplishments in the areas of solid waste reduction, increased recycling, energy efficiency and reductions in both emissions and water usage.

“Our employees and their families annually participate in community environmental improvement projects like the recent Galveston Bay Foundation effort to restore marsh areas in Galveston Bay tidal pools,” said Steve Ghiglieri, senior plant manager for Anheuser-Busch’s Houston brewery. “These efforts – combined with our renewable energy and recycling initiatives at our brewery -- allow us to give back to the community and help improve the environment for future generations.”

The Houston brewery is the second largest in the Anheuser-Busch system and produces more than 12 million barrels of beer per year. An example of the brewery’s renewable energy initiatives is the use of a Bio-Energy Recovery Systems (BERS) technology that converts nutrients in leftover water from the brewing process into renewable biogas. Anheuser-Busch is the world’s largest operator of BERS. The Houston brewery recycled 99.7 percent of the solid waste it generated in 2006. Materials include brewers’ grain, plastic strapping, stretch wrap, aluminum, glass, cardboard, plastics, office paper and metal.

“The renewable biogas produced at the BERS operation is returned to help power the brewery,” Ghiglieri said. “In 2006, BERS provided 17.7 percent of the Houston brewery’s fuel needs.” In addition, Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of the Houston brewery, through the support of its charitable Foundation, has contributed approximately $3.5 million to the greater Houston area over the past decade.

Based in St. Louis, Anheuser-Busch is the leading American brewer, holding a 48.4 percent share of U.S. beer sales. The company brews the world’s largest-selling beers, Budweiser and Bud Light. Anheuser-Busch ranked No. 1 among beverage companies in FORTUNE Magazine’s Most Admired U.S. Companies list in 2007. Anheuser-Busch is one of the largest theme park operators in the United States, is a major manufacturer of aluminum cans and one of the world’s largest recyclers of aluminum cans. In addition, Anheuser-Busch supports a variety of community-level and national environmental organizations, such as Keep America Beautiful, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and The Conservation Fund. The companies SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Adventure Parks are leaders in animal rescue and rehabilitation and have supported conservation projects worldwide for more than 30 years.
